St. Isaac's Cathedral

The St. Isaac  is the largest Russian orthodox Cathedral in  Saint Petersburg, Russia. It's dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great. built in 1818 till 1858 with Augustei Montferrand as architect.

The main dome ( that's very awesome) rises 101,5 metres and is plated with pure gold. decorated with 12 statues of angeks by Josef Hermann. During world war II  the dome was painted over in gray to avoid from enemy aircraft. In 1931 the cathedral turned into museum of the History of religion and Atheism. With the fall of communism, the main body of the cathedral is used for services on feast days only.

Thank you so much for amazing postcard Alyona :). Большое спасибо!
